On April 19, 1904, a hostile fire started at the Currie Building at Bay and Wellington in Toronto. The fire swept across the city core to the south-east. By the next morning, the fire was contained but the damage was horrendous. More than eight city blocks were destroyed, 5,000 workers lost their jobs and the city suffered property damage in excess of $10 million.
The great losses sustained by his neighbours lead Mr. Martin Merry to establish an insurance brokerage firm. Thanks to Mr. Merry’s business knowhow, high integrity and empathy, the firm flourished. Spencer (Spike) Merry soon joined his father in serving companies such as Gooderham and Worts, Christie Bakeries, Kerr Addison Gold Mines and the Toronto Transit Commission.
In 1949, Jack Browne joined the firm. Jack’s spirit and keen sense for client satisfaction led the firm to new heights. Sadly, in 1953, Mr. Merry became ill and passed away. Jack Browne purchased the brokerage.
As Toronto grew, so did the success of Martin Merry & Reid Limited. Since 1984, Jack Browne’s son, David, has headed the family business. As the president and CEO, David continues to strive to meet the high standards of professionalism, integrity and community service set by Mr. Martin Merry.
